What to Expect
You don't have to tell your whole story
You don't have to tell your whole story, or talk about anything you don't feel ready to discuss. Counselling is a process, and you can share things at your own pace. Your counsellor will help you find a starting point that feels comfortable and explore what feels important to you.
It's okay to get emotional
Counselling can sometimes bring up difficult or emotional feelings, and crying is a completely natural part of that. You don't need to apologise or feel embarrassed if you cry. Your counsellor will give you the time and space you need and will be there to support you without judgement.
You don't need to know what to talk about
You don't need to arrive at every session knowing exactly what you want to talk about. Your counsellor can help you explore how you have been feeling and what has been happening for you. Sometimes, simply starting with what's on your mind that day is all you need to do.
A safe and confidential space
Counselling provides a confidential space where you can feel able to talk openly and honestly. There are some limits to confidentiality, particularly if your counsellor has serious concerns about your safety or the safety of someone else. Your counsellor will talk you through confidentiality and its limits at the beginning of your counselling, so you know what to expect.
A regular time for you
Sessions last around 50 minutes and take place weekly. Having a regular time set aside each week gives you the space to slow down, talk things through and focus on what you need from your counselling session.
If you need to miss a session
We understand that sometimes things happen and you may not be able to make your session. If you need to cancel or are unable to attend, please let your counsellor know as soon as possible. We ask for 48 hours' notice where possible, as your session time is reserved especially for you. Our cancellation policy means that sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice are non-refundable.
